Gene has 24 years of experience serving nonprofit organizations, primarily in the western United States. He is considered one of the region’s foremost authorities in the fields of planned giving and advancement. He writes regularly for regional and national publications and speaks in conference settings all over the country. He has been quoted in the Chronicle of Philanthropy and has been asked to testify before the Oregon state legislature on matters involving charitable planning. He is seasoned, and has been successful, in virtually every aspect of the development profession. He conducts visioning and strategic planning sessions for the organizations he serves, provides internal program audits, feasibility and campaign planning assistance, multi-faceted marketing plan development, board presentations, and recruitment services.

Kay Levet



Kay, our Central Oregon team member, has more than 30 years experience in general development, 20 of which have been in planned giving. Her career began with two large national social service organizations. Kay’s distinguished portfolio includes serving the needs of nonprofit radio, environmental, cultural, and faith-based organizations seeking skilled leadership in planned giving and development. For nine years, she served as adjunct professor with the Institute for Nonprofit Management at Portland State University, co-teaching the course “Developing a Gift Planning Program.” She is an experienced lecturer and teacher. Kay was one of the early leaders of the Northwest Planned Giving Roundtable, a premier association of planned giving professionals. Her development work has provided her many opportunities to assist with major gift and capital campaign programs, thus giving her the ability to provide comprehensive fund development service to CEPN clients. With her track record in general development and planned giving, she is especially skilled at helping organizations launch planned giving programs and revitalizing existing ones. Kay is prepared to help organizations successfully integrate planned giving into their existing development programs.

Sarah Markuson Schwarz, J.D.


Sarah has eight years of experience in planned giving; four of those years were at the director level within the health care industry. She has worked with a variety of nonprofits, including an independent school, a large international relief organization, and a program for disadvantaged youth. Sarah is experienced in starting planned giving programs and in creating and implementing successful planned giving marketing strategies. She is an accomplished presenter on planned giving topics, having received high ratings from a variety of audiences — including development officers, board members and professional advisors. In 2000 and 2001, she was selected to be a presenter at the National Committee on Planned Giving Annual Conference.

Robert H. McSweeny, J.D.


Robert is a retired attorney with many years of experience in estate planning and business transactions.A long-time officer and board member of nonprofit organizations, he has served as director of planned giving at the college level. Bob trains nonprofit groups to develop and manage their own planned giving programs. He has worked with all levels and types of planned and deferred gifts. He is the author of A Planned Giving Manual For Churches and has also co-authored the recently published A Process For Prudent Institutional Investment. Bob is an experienced lecturer and teacher and is a contributor to a number of publications.

Boyd has a distinguished career in communications, and public service leadership. Michele Christian


Michele is formerly the Southern California Regional Director for Human Resources with May Company International, an affiliated company of Meier and Frank. In her role, she was in charge of 13 stores and the recruiting, hiring, and retention of 13,000 employees for May Company. She has a marketing and management degree from the University of Oregon and a master’s degree from Chapman University in Human Resources Management.
